review of poncho pelligroso's 'the romantic' (OUT ?????????? on ??????)

"everyone is an other"

i recently read the romantic by poncho pelligroso.  i was unable to italicize the title of this book in the title of this post so i used 'scare quotes' instead.

he is linked to your left under the section entitled 'people'.

he released this book by himself, kind of.  he is trying to create buzz, so he offered to allow people galley copies in order to review it and spread the word.  i think he probably realizes that most of his 'hardcore fans' are the ones who requested the book's pdf to review.  i am a hardcore fan.  i feel he can probably get this published pretty easily somewhat soon.

this is the kind of poetry i like.  he has a sense of attempting completion or unity in his poetry while all the while having a buried scream about how such an attempt is futile but he still has to attempt it anyway.  he has his own ideas.  he has his own style.  he's cool.

i think if it was published online or in print it would be even better.  i think it would have made an excellent bear parade publication back when bear parade still published stuff.  i think that it would be cool to have drawings or photos or any art in it if it was published, maybe in print.  i don't know if that would ruin poncho's vision, or whatever, but a lot of of it has good imagery but also it is all really spread out (i think it is ~10,000 words over the course of 91 pages; that's like 100 words/page or something) but i didn't really mind it but it could be cool with images but its cool anyway.  it has this dynamic where he switches between almost empty pages and then other pages where he can't find enough room to fit everything he wants to fit onto the page onto the page.  i thought that was funny, interesting, and aesthetically pleasing.

the book is organized around the months of the year.  this struck me as a little too cutesy/formulaic but it didn't ruin the experience for me and actually by the end i was kind of enjoying it because it gave it a narrative flow, or something.  a lot of it is about love but more of it is about the narrator.  he seems to have trouble relating to the world.  i can relate to that.

he is intellectual and creative and funny and sad and everything else i like in a writer.  i can't wait to read more of his work (that sounded cliche, but im being serious).  it is going to be crazy to watch his literary career arc, actually i dont really care about any arc, but i want to read more of his shit.

his face is symmetrical which is a sign of beauty i guess but it scares me.
